Bleu, Blanc, Rouge

Hey guys! Welcome to another What I Wore This Week post, where I feature an outfit I wore during the week, the occasion and how I styled it.

Last Saturday night, I got to hang out with my sister Safiya and my beautiful friends in the city of Lyon. Since Safiya just moved to France, I’ve been showing her the ropes of how to do the French Apéro, which is a fancy way of saying pre-drinking. Except, we do it the French and sophisticated way: we have a glass of wine (rosé or sweet white wine if it’s summer, and red wine when it’s winter) accompanied by a variety of cheese and dry sausage.

Image-1

Then we met with my talented friend Tatiana Vergnaud, who is also a photographer, and we had a cocktail each. After that, we met up with more friends at Ninkasi, a hot spot for delicious burgers and beer. After feeding ourselves, we finally got to the town center and had the most decadent pink milkshake cocktail at the L Bar. By pacing yourself on Saturday night, and making sure you’ve eaten, you won’t end up drunk by the end of the night, and even better, you won’t wake up with a hangover !

Event: Apéro & Bar-hopping with friends

This is one of my favorite tops to wear: I got it on sale at Zara (bae for life) and it’s a wrap-tie shirt. I love the elegance of having a bow hanging from the side of this shirt, and I especially like the off-the-shoulder look. I chose this blue-striped one because I felt like the blue would make a great contrast with my skin (there was baby pink, sky blue, navy blue and white).

IMG_3990 copie

I’ve had these white lace shorts from Stradivarius for three years, and they still haven’t gone out of style. Stradivarius is one of my favorite stores, but they closed down in Lyon unfortunately. These shorts are perfect for when it’s too hot to wear denim. They’re casual enough to wear during the day, and lacy enough to wear in the evening. These Nike huarache sneakers are the perfect balance to an otherwise formal outfit.

IMG_3989 copie

I love wearing color these days, so I got out my red leather purse that a Tuareg friend from Niger gave me. Just look how it matches my Colourpop lipstick ! And I don’t know if you recognize these gold earrings I got from Zaful for less than $4, but they are the minimalist touch to any outfit you can think of.

IMG_3991 copie (1)

IMG_3992 copie

And recognize these sunglasses from Rose Carbone ? I love to wear them on any occasion, and even though I wore them for about 30 minutes (the sun set soon after this photoshoot), I felt so glamourous. Can you tell ?

Under my Umbrella with Jamais le Mardi

Well.. I’m officially a certified middle and high school English teacher !  That’s what I had been working on this past year and I’m finally able to enjoy my summer vacation. One of my favorite magazines Jamais Le Mardi reached out to me for their bloggers’ edition and I am so proud to show you what we worked out !

So first of all… @cosmacome on Instagram drew a caricature of me for Jamais Le Mardi. What do you think?

23

Awesome right ?!

So for the collaboration, my favorite photographer Tatiana Vergnaud shot me in the rain, and the results were lovely. Check out the beautiful pictures and What I Wore for Jamais Le Mardi!

Event: Jamais le Mardi Bloggers’ Edition Photoshoot

01

This is my absolute favorite jumpsuit to wear because it never goes out of style, it’s elegant, and it was customized! You can’t really see it under the jacket but this used to be a halter neck jumpsuit I got from H&M for NYE’ 16. The problem was that (believe it or not) the neckline was too low, and I just had to do something about it. So the halter neck was switched to two straps to give my chest more support. Also, I hope you like the popping colors of my New Look handbag and Zara heels.

08

It was raining, so I had my clear umbrella by La Chaise Longue and wore this faux leather jacket from Zara. Initially, I wanted a real leather jacket but I finally settled for this one instead. Leather jackets are great for long-term wear, but for ethical reasons, I just don’t see myself splurging in a real leather jacket made from the suffering of animals. And yes I eat meat, but protein is necessary, leather isn’t. And before we begin debating if meat is necessary, I was a vegetarian for a long time but for health reasons I wasn’t able to continue a meatless diet. So anyway! I found this gorgeous piece of faux leather at Zara and it’s comfortable and it doesn’t even look fake.

02

09

I said it once, and I’ll say it again: if you have nothing to wear, wear a jumpsuit because it’s an entire outfit in one. Then tie a belt at your waist for an effortlessly chic look.

I was the stylist for the UMWALI SS18 Fashion Show! // WIWTW

As I told you in previous posts, I’ve been busy with a lot of collaborations and projects for the past month. By far, this is my favorite one, because I made one of my dreams come true.

A few months ago, Nina Marlyn, one of my favorite fashion designers in Lyon, asked me to be the stylist for her upcoming fashion show at the Rwandan Cultural event, May 20th.  I was so excited and I had no idea if I would be able to do it, because this was the first time that I’d be styling models for a fashion show. If you don’t know what that means, basically I got to dress each model and style their outfits (from head to toe) using Nina’s UMWALI pieces from her new collection Umurage. There was a lot to do, there were 13 models (and even an 8 year old Naomi Campbell) but it was an incredible experience !

To promote the fashion show, we did a photoshoot with Nina’s favorite pieces from her new UMURAGE collection.

And at the end of the fashion show, Nina gave me this gorgeous dress from her new collection UMURAGE.

Yes, these gorgeous heels from Zara are back again, and they go with everything, so there’s another excuse to wear them ! Also, I was able to keep them on all night, so bonus points for comfort!

UMWALIDSC_0066

This simple wax print detail is what makes this minimalist dress so unique. It’s just a peak, but it’s just enough to remind you of UMWALI‘s Rwandan heritage.

And as for the lip cuff… it’s a fake piercing of course ! I decided to trend this cute new summer trend for the fun of the outfit. I got mine in sterling silver for €2.50 at a local jewellery store. I bought another one that doubles as a fake septum piercing :)

What to Wear to your Anniversary Dinner

Hey guys! Welcome to another What I Wore This Week post, where I feature an outfit I wore during the week, the occasion and how I styled it.

I’ve missed you guys and I’ve missed writing on my five-year-old blog. I’m back with a new post, and this one is special because I got to collaborate with my friend Tatiana Vergnaud. She’s the one who took Sidney and my picture for the magazine Jamais le Mardi a few months ago. Tatiana is a gorgeous redhead, she’s always smiling, and more importantly her talent is just I N C R E D I B L E. She chose to do the photoshoot in front of the Historical Courthouse of Lyon, and I felt like a Greek goddess.

Event: Anniversary Dinner with Sidney

Before I get into the fashionable details of this outfit, let me just say that I am so blessed to have Sidney in my life. It’s been two years, and we are still just as smitten as on the first day. To mark this special occasion, Sidney made reservations at this beautiful chic restaurant in Lyon 6e, called Le Théodore. The food was delicious and the environment was cozy. We absolutely loved it.

Before the dinner, I was pretty nervous because I had absolutely nothing to wear. I needed something chic, comfortable and sophisticated, so I went straight to Zara.

Anniversary Outfit by Tatiana03

I tried on a lot of outfits, until I thought to myself, “Wait a minute. The easiest outfit to wear on a fancy date, is a chic jumpsuit!” Twenty minutes later, I was trying on this beautiful number and making my way to the cashier.

If you have nothing to wear, wear a JUMPSUIT ! It’s basically a top and a pair of trousers sewn together, leaving you with a glamorous one piece.

Because the jumpsuit is very chic and minimal on its own, I wanted to add a fun touch to my outfit. So instead of a handbag, I chose to wear a robot box from Zara. Yes a robot box, you read that right. You’ve probably seen it in Garde Robe’s BLACK GIRL MAGIC photoshoot, but I also hijacked it for this event. YOU GUYS ISN’T IT PERFECT?!

Finally, I chose beige sandal heels by Glaze to finish off the look so that the only contrast to my outfit would be my robot box.

Also, this is the first time I’ve shown you my full blown afro that I’ve been taking care of for the past four years. Tatiana knew exactly how to capture it, and I’m in awe.

Vintage Bomber Jacket + Fishnet Tights + Wax Print

Hey guys! Welcome to another What I Wore This Week post, where I feature an outfit I wore during the week, the occasion and how I styled it.

I took a break from studying for my finals to head over to the Annual Vintage Fashion Market (Marché de la Mode Vintage) in Lyon this weekend. For the occasion, there were three things that I really wanted to wear: Sidney’s vintage bomber jacket he got in Camden Town, my fishnet tights from ASOS and my Burkinabè wax print scarf from my mom. I had worn all three separately, but the same way I get food cravings, I get fashion cravings. If you add having a bad hair day to the mix, this is what I came up with:

Purple Rain Bomber Jacket23

Event: Vintage Fashion Market in Lyon

Purple Rain Bomber Jacket32

My favorite thing about this outfit is how well the colors go together and how different each piece is. Starting with the bomber jacket: Sidney and I went to Urban Outfitters in Camden Town (London) last October and we found this beautiful thing. Its soft, silky material is perfect for the warmer weather.

Purple Rain Bomber Jacket65

Oh yes, and that Russian badge gives a fierce military touch to this ensemble.

Purple Rain Bomber Jacket51

Purple Rain Bomber Jacket50

My mom gave me some beautiful wax print scarves from Burkina Faso. This one is my favorite design because of the vibrant colors, so I decided to wear it with the outfit. It’s also a great way for me to style my hair when I don’t feel like detangling it. I chose this particular style because it’s vintage!

Purple Rain Bomber Jacket42

Yes, you guessed it. Those are my fishnet tights peeking out from under my customized destroyed jeans. I purposely destroyed these jeans for this very purpose. I love fishnet tights and find them especially edgy under ripped denim.

Purple Rain Bomber Jacket37

I customized these black high-rise jeans from New Look by taking a pair of scissors and cutting the knees out. Then I made a slit on the upper thigh of the right leg and then another slit at the back of the upper left thigh.

Purple Rain Bomber Jacket81

Finally, I wore black sock boots from Zara to accentuate my legs.

Valentine’s Weekend in Paris

Hey guys! Welcome to another What I Wore This Week post, where I feature an outfit I wore during the week, the occasion and how I styled it.

Two weeks ago, Sidney and I went to Paris for the weekend after Valentine’s Day. Though we had a few Garde Robe meetings to attend and photo shoots to do, we also had a wonderful time being tourists. We ate at my favorite Mexican Taqueria (taco restaurant) so far, called El Guacamole in the 10th arrondissement, we walked along les Champs Elysées (and took a few street-style pictures!), we took a lovely evening stroll near the Notre Dame cathedral with my cousin, and witnessed a bride and groom taking their wedding pictures in front of the Eiffel Tower. By night time, we were dining at a cute Italian restaurant in the 18th arrondissement and went to la Bellevilloise and danced to soul music until dawn. During the weekend, we stopped by Le Comptoir Général for some rum cocktails and great music. More and more happened, and we had a lovely time.

Anyone who knows me can confirm that Hilary Banks is me and I am Hilary Banks. If you don’t know who that is, then go back in time to when you were a kid in the 90’s, grab the remote control from whoever was hogging the TV and switch the channel to NBC. FRESH PRINCE OF BEL-AIR, in case you are still clueless, is the best TV show that you can get your 90’s fashion inspiration from. Be it Hilary Banks and her perfect matching hats and suits, (both) Vivian Banks’ shoulder-padded dresses, grown-up Ashley’s hot crop-tops or ALL of Will Smith’s outfits, look no further. The entire Banks family (minus perhaps Carlton) should be your go-to source for fashion. With the 80’s and 90’s making a comeback on the runway, I knew that I had to get a bright blazer with shoulder pads like Hilary or Vivian Banks. I did very successfully and found this gorgeous red Marks & Spencers blazer that I got at a thrift shop here for THREE EUROS.

dsc_0079

I wore this blazer recently to an interview with black sock boots & a crisp white shirt. I’m sure it worked wonders (the interview was successful) but I preferred to walk around Paris in a stylish and comfortable outfit. That’s why I opted for these white Nike Air Huarache Ultra sneakers (paired with long white socks for the cold) that Sidney gave me for Christmas. Also featured in this sexy outfit is my favorite city bag from Zara.

dsc_0109

Again, because I was going for a comfortable look, I chose to wear these dark wash mom jeans from Pimkie and a tight-knit grey turtleneck from Jennyfer.

dsc_0044

Finally, to match my crimson red blazer, I wore my Milani Cosmetics Devotion #14 lipstick.

WIWTW: Styling a vintage trench coat with a statement purse

Hey guys! Welcome to another What I Wore This Week post, where I feature an outfit I wore during the week, the occasion and how I styled it.

Last week, I went thrift-shopping with Sidney and we bought about 10 pieces: coats, blazers (including a Marks & Spencers blazer with shoulder pads!), and dainty silk shirts – FOR ONLY 30 EUROS IN TOTAL. If you do the math, this means that we paid about 3 euros per coat. This beautiful trench is one of them, and I decided to wear it to our Garde Robe interview with NinkiMag. (I’ll tell you more about that once the video is out, but we got interviewed by a streetwear magazine based in Lyon last Sunday!)

trench-coat-wiwtw252

Event: Garde Robe’s interview for NinkiMag

trench-coat-wiwtw207

This trench, you guys, is just one of the best things I’ve ever bought and worn. I’ve always wanted a Burberry trench (this one is by Claude Havrey) because of their elegance and length, but they were always so expensive. This one, I found in a vintage shop in Lyon called Emmaus, for only THREE EUROS!!!! I decided to work my entire outfit around this trench, because I wanted to be 100% classy.

trench-coat-wiwtw244

Chokers have been really in this season and I love how this gold one from Pretty Little Thing adds metallic sophistication to my black turtleneck from Zara.

trench-coat-wiwtw256

And then there’s my favorite bag from New Look that I got this summer in Dubai. Its citrus-themed color block design is perfect when you want a statement bag to upgrade your look ! Plus it’s big enough to put just about anything from your computer to your heels inside. (Yes, this is an important factor for me because when I go out in cute but torturous heels, I like to keep a pair of sneakers in my purse just in case. I don’t believe in suffering to be beautiful. How are you attractive when your face is clearly wincing with pain?)

I don’t know who I think I am but I am totally flipping my hair in this picture.

trench-coat-wiwtw269

Finally I wanted the entire focus to be on my trench, bag and choker, so I wore black dress pants from Zara, and my favorite black booties from Zara.

trench-coat-wiwtw234

trench-coat-wiwtw221

And in case you were wondering who did my hair, I met an amazing hairdresser called Anaelle who does beautiful box braids (and a lot of other hairstyles) for very cheap prices. She was so professional and braided my hair in 4 hours (though it usually takes 7). So if you’re in Lyon and you need your hair done, comment below and I’ll give you Anaelle’s contact information!

WIWTW: Styling Timberlands in Chicago

Hey guys! Welcome to another What I Wore This Week post, where I feature an outfit I wore during the week, the occasion and how I styled it.

Over Christmas break, my sister Safiya and I got to spend some time with one of our brothers Roshan, in Chicago. I had never been there before so I was really excited to discover such a huge city. I loved it so much and I would be ecstatic to go again. Apart from meeting some of the most down-to-earth and interesting people I’ve ever met, I visited Cloud Gate by Anish Kapoor (my artist sister insists that I call it as such, but most people know it by its nickname ‘The Bean’). Downtown Chicago is beautiful and the skyline is breathtaking. As an overseas American who hasn’t visited much of the USA, I felt like a tourist, taking in every mesmerizing scene in front of me.

dsc_0103

We met some pretty cool Uber drivers but we also did a lot of walking. And you know what’s made for walking? ‘These boots’. (See what I did there?)

chicago-wiwtw03

Event: Sight-seeing in Chicago

Raise your hand if you’ve ever wanted to buy Timberlands but saw way too many people wearing them. *raises hand* I’m a part of this group, but then I changed my mind: they’re comfortable, they give an urban edge to everything, and they really were made for walking. I got them in just the right color for Christmas: the original yellowish ones, because they really just go with everything. I have enough black shoes in my closet, so I wanted something different from my own wardrobe.

dsc_0035

I wore my light blue mom jeans from Stradivarius (I got them on sale for €10.00 when I was in Dubai this summer!) and my all-time-favorite sweater by Puma. This is not just any Puma sweater. This is a chunky, 90’s cut, sweater from Rihanna’s collaboration with Puma “Fenty x PUMA by Rihanna”, that I got in a beautiful shop in Milan called Minus More Much. It’s one of my most favorite things to wear because it’s so unique. I personally haven’t seen anybody else with it though I’m sure there are many other Rihanna fans walking around with it somewhere. Idc, this is my favorite sweater in the world. It’s comfortable and the gold shiny “9” at the front gives my outfit an athletic feel.

dsc_0080

chicago-wiwtw15

Because it was pretty cold in Chicago, I got to wear my puffy padded jacket from H&M. You can’t really see how well-shaped it is here, but gives my entire look some volume.

You already know my black faux leather pouch from Zara, but here are my gorgeous Timbs.

In the midst of this photoshoot (taken by Safiya), two guys tried to ask my sister to prom. When she proceeded to tell them that she doesn’t live in Chicago, one of them even offered to buy her a plane ticket and fly her out for prom. He was so serious that he decided he should take our picture, and I promised to share his photography skills on my blog so here you go, sir:

WIWTW: London Oxfords in Camden

Hey guys! Welcome to another What I Wore This Week post, where I feature an outfit I wore during the week, the occasion and how I styled it.

Last week, Sidney and I took a few days off to head to London (UK) for a weekend getaway. We stayed at my aunt’s in Feltham (she was the sweetest – thank you!) and visited Camden, Brick Lane, London center and more. We met so many stylish people so we took a dozen street-style shots for Garde Robe. (Stay tuned for the fabulous photos this weekend!)

dsc_0032

Event: Visiting Camden Town

On our second day, we decided to head over to Camden Town because we heard that there were quite a few vintage shops there. We ended up spending the entire day there – there was so much to do, see, buy, eat, it was overwhelming. My favorite store was Urban Outfitters, but unfortunately I didn’t find exactly what I wanted.

did however, get a cute pair of oxford shoes from a Leather Boots and Shoes shop in Camden, for only £25.00 on sale! They’re so comfortable, they’re real leather and grey felt detail is very unique.

dsc_0067

I chose the rest of my outfit based on these shoes, so I decided to wear my white plush dress from Pull & Bear as a long t-shirt.

And then I wore my favorite bomber jacket in the world that I bought from Pull & Bear. It’s silky material is very soft and I especially love the delicate blush pink detail at the back. It reminds me of a kimono.

dsc_0056

When I got the bomber jacket, I just had to get these matching mirror sunglasses from Pull & Bear. And then I borrowed Sidney’s hat from Asos.

dsc_0107

dsc_0039

Finally, I chose this little black velvet/leather pouch to complete the minimalist look.

dsc_0134

We had so much fun in Camden. I mean, we did so much shopping and got great bargains from vintage stores like Rokit. We also took a picture with the Mad Hatter.

WIWTW: Distressed Jeans + Autumn Kimono

Hey guys! Welcome to another What I Wore This Week post, where I feature an outfit I wore during the week, the occasion and how I styled it.

It’s not even Autumn yet and it’s already cold again. I wished so hard for it to stay sunny indefinitely, but like every year, I was disappointed. It suddenly went from being too hot to stay outside to being too cold to be out of my bed.

dsc_0003

Event: Late lunch & Shopping

I’ve always found it tricky to dress up distressed jeans during summer time, so I had been holding out on wearing these ripped jeans from Stradivarius until it got cooler. Now, before I get into how I styled them, here’s why ripped jeans are a thing now:

-They’re so EDGY. If distressed jeans were a person, they’d be that one moody sarcastic kid you saw around in high school. They’re fashion’s way of saying: so what if I’m ripped, I’m still a pair of pants, and I’m awesome AF.

-They can be SEXY. They really can, if the rips are in the right places (above the knees, for example), your distressed jeans will make heads turn.

-They can DRESS DOWN your look. If you’re wearing a chic shirt with a pair of heels, but you’re heading to class or an evening out with the girls, ripped jeans are the perfect fit.

For this outfit, I chose to wear a pair of blush-pink espadrille flats so my shoes wouldn’t take away the attention from the other vibrant colors.

dsc_0043

Then I chose this grey turtleneck from H&M and paired it with my new favorite drape-cape-thingy-majiggy (what is this even called, it’s not a poncho or a cardigan?) that I got from H&M as well. I’m going to call it a cape. I LOVE capes like this because they can be worn on hot days (with a tank top and shorts) or chilly days (with long sleeves and pants). I especially love the Autumn colors, they’re so vibrant and perfect for this season. I’ll be wearing this cape with black, white, brown, grey, khaki and mustard colored clothes.

And y’all already know about my cute black pouch from Zara, it’s half faux leather and half faux suede.
